Danielson back in the saddle

By Aaron Unterreiner
Herald Sports Writer

What do an ultrarunner, an Olympic mountain biker, a USPRO road racing champion and the 2005 Tour de Georgia winner have in common?

They're all disciples of Dr. Frank Jarrell of Durango.

Jarrell, the founder and president of Spinal Reflex Analysis, treats the likes of Emily Baer, Todd Wells, Chris Wherry and Tom Danielson, and his results are producing their results.

Spinal Reflex Analysis, or SRA, focuses on the root cause of every reflex reaction along the spinal cord. Those reactions, known as Axial Spinal Reflexes, or ASRs, are completely unavoidable in the movements of everyday life and cause the body's muscles and ligaments to deteriorate.

ASRs cause muscle and ligament contraction, which results in weakness, fatigue, spasms, arthritis, and, in Danielson's case, joint compression. SRA, which Jarrell has been researching for 12 years, eliminates the ASRs and allows the athlete to use his entire reserve of energy and, consequently, perform to his fullest potential.

"Frank was a big part of my recovery,"said Danielson, who spent a month in Durango recovering from a knee injury he suffered during his victory at the Tour of Georgia.

"This is why he worked with the Discovery Channel team at the Tour of Georgia and why he will be with us at the Vuelta this year."

As Jarrell explains it, our modern lifestyles "turn on" the ASRs, and SRAis designed to turn them off. His treatments are catching on.

At Danielson's request, Jarrell was flown to Georgia to assist the Fort Lewis College alum in his quest for the Tour of Georgia title. Danielson first experienced pain in his knee while climbing Brasstown Bald, Jarrell helped eliminate the pain and helped deliver a win.

"I think what happened was when he entered the mountains, the temperatures were in the upper 30's,"Jarrell explained of Danielson's injury suffered during Stage 5 of the six-day tour. "It was an odd cold front. He pushed hard, and the muscles chilled. That set up a whole cascade of events."

Jarrell labeled Danielson's malady as "squenching," when the muscle is jammed into the tendon. The squenching caused an abrasion on the meniscus, and Jarrell said the "problem with the tracking only magnified the (squenching)."

"With that type of injury ... How should I put it? ... if unchecked it could be very serious,"Jarrell said.

Danielson pedaled through the injury to win the Georgia, and then attempted the Giro d'Italia before withdrawing one week into the three-week tour.

Danielson returned home to Durango and with the help of Jarrell and therapist David Farmer, returned to form as well.

"I love Durango so much I think being home had a big part in dealing with this injury so well," Danielson said. "When I did get back on the bike three weeks ago, Ihad great people to train with."

Danielson completed his first competitive racing since the injury on Sunday with a fifth-place finish in the Tour of Austria. Although not racing to win ("For me it is simply training and just get through it,"he said during the race.), Danielson still managed a top five finish and was the first Discovery Channel member to finish the seven-day tour.

"The knee is 110 percent," he said. "Isay 110 because Ihave corrected an imbalance that I actually have more power on the bike. So I have no pain now, but on the bike, under fatigue, Ihave more power."

That's a scary thought for the rest of Cycling Nation.

Already considered one of the strongest climbers on the circuit, Danielson continued to impress during the time trials. He finished second overall in the Tour of Austria's uphill time trial.

Danielson will race the Sachen Tour in Germany in late July, a one-day Protour event in San Sebastian, Spain, in August, and then the Vuelta a España in late September.

Despite his own heavy workload, Danielson has kept a close eye on his mentor and teammates in the Tour de France.

"Discovery has ridden a flawless tour, which is no surprise,"he said. "These guys all have worked so hard all year and under (team director)Johan (Bruyneel), they have the best direction.

"There still is a ton of race to go, but I talked to Lance a few days ago and he sounded very confident. He is so strong in his head, when it is good, his body follows."

Danielson admits to feeling a touch of remorse for not being able to ride next to Armstrong in his final tour, but knows his time will come.

"Of course I wish I was there, but everything happens for a reason,"he said. "I will have plenty of tours in the future, but Lance's last tour is special, and it would have been nice to be a part of."

Jarrell, at Danielson's behest, plans on joining the Discovery Channel team to administer SRA during the Vuelta.

"We're going to put all this to the test,"Jarrell said. "It's the perfect opportunity; we get a full race to apply it, and it's a very important race for (Danielson)."

Colorado Chiropractor treats Pro-Cyclists at Tour de Georgia - April 30, 2005

Frank Jarrell, DC, SRA-SPS/HCS, of Durango, Colorado recently returned from the 2005 Dodge Tour of Georgia. As an SRA-Sports Performance Specialist, Dr. Jarrell provided Spinal Reflex Analysis (SRA) procedures to various pro-cyclists to evaluate inter-stage race recovery and overall gains in net performance.

The Tour de Georgia is an important international event for professional road cycling. It is a six-day stage race and is the only one of its’ kind that attracts would class cycling teams to the United States.

The initial pro-cyclist volunteers for this SRA trial application at the Tour of Georgia included
Chris Wherry of HealthNet, Jeremy Powers of Jelly Belly and Andy Guptill for the US National Team. An additional seven cyclists were treated impromptu during the race. They included Benjamin Brooks of Jelly Belly, Gordon Fraser of HealthNet, and five members of the Discovery Channel Team.

Johan Bruyneel, Directeur Sportif of the Discovery Channel Team, approved SRA work for Antonio Cruz, Michael Barry, Jason McCartney, and Tom Danielson on day three, and Lance Armstrong on day four of the race.

The Discovery Channel Team won first overall during the fifth stage break-away with Tom Danielson finishing first and team leader Lance Armstrong in third position as support.

"The Discovery strategy was brilliant and an absolute thrill to watch. The excitement of seeing and working with all of these phenomenal athletes was one step beyond amazing, and all
SRA procedures utilized during the race held up flawlessly."

Dr. Jarrell expresses his "immense gratitude to all of the various team cyclists, directors, and team physicians for the opportunity to bring SRA non-pharmaceutical performance enhancement procedures to the field of cycling for evaluation under these extreme race conditions."

"
A special thanks to Tom Danielson for his assistance and his unique position as a motivator, role model and an incredible racer, and to Lance Armstrong, Tom’s mentor and a person of whom I have immense respect for, both as a racer and as a humanitarian, and to Johan Bruyneel for trusting me with his guys in the middle of a very important race."

Dr. Jarrell will also travel to Italy in May to provide additional SRA Performance therapy to Tom Danielson of the Discovery Channel Team during the Giro de Italia 21 day stage race.

SRA is the culmination of years of clinical application, field experience and formal research into the effects of the axial spinal reflex on health and performance.

Dr. Jarrell and co-researchers Wayne Barger, ATC, Luke Angle, ATC, PT and Robert Culver, MES, CMT recently completed a second successful year of research on "The Affects of SRA on Athletic Performance Enhancement" at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. The latest study was a double-blind, randomized, cross-over format and included cross gender and multi-sport evaluation.

SRA is a neurology based diagnostic and treatment protocol utilizing chiropractic, soft tissue and physical therapy treatment techniques.
